SONITRA SUSPENDS CONSTRUCTION OF NKAWKAW-ATIBIE ROAD FOR LACK OF FUNDS

Construction of the Nkawkaw –Atibie road has been ongoing since the past 16 months by the Sonitra group, a construction firm known in the country to have constructed a number of our roads. The road was closed before the last easter celebrations to pave way for its construction and workers have since been noticed working effortlessly and tirelessly to meet the dead line proposed for completion and commissioning.

However, a follow up to the road construction site has revealed that the construction firm has moved all its equipment’s pushing work to come to a halt.

According to Honorable Eric Kwakye Daffour, Member of Parliament for Nkawkaw constituency, the contractor and workers have declined continuing the construction because amount due the contractor have not been paid by the government, even though many letters and attempts have been made to tend governments attention to the fact that, there was no money available to push the project to a completion stage.

The MP also said that, checks on the construction shows that between 40 and 50% is done rendering the contractor penniless to move on since government has not yet paid him. He has therefore promised not to relent but will tirelessly lease up with Honorable Seth Acheampong, MP for Mpraeso constituency to have talks with the ministry of finance, Ghana Highway authority and the Chief of staff, Mr. Julius Debrah so that the contractor gets back to the road in the shortest possible time.

In conclusion, the MP disclosed that government in his recently read budget has allotted funds to cater for all unpaid contractors in the country and when the fund is released at the right time will go a long way to have the construction of the road completed.

He however expressed unhappiness about the situation which compelled the contractor to lay off about 120 workers from the municipality. “My people are suffering and I am not happy about this development, he commented”.
