The Accra Regional Police Command has commended the leadership of Organised Labour for comporting themselves during their protest against government’s increases in petroleum prices and utility tariffs.
In a statement signed by COP George Dampare, the police indicated that the demonstration, which involved over 3,500 individuals, was well organised and conducted within the realms of the law.
The statement said, “All though a full assessment and evaluation of the entire exercise has just begun, the Police can state that, the demonstration was well organised and conducted within the tenet of the public order management.”
The police also advised the organisers of the protest to work with the Police Regional Command in the event of future demonstrations to ensure law and order.
“…The police will entreat future event organisers to work with the Regional Command to ensure utmost maintenance of law and order, especially during this election year and beyond.”
Meanwhile, Organised Labour will be meeting with the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Haruna Iddrisu, on Thursday at the Flagstaff house to negotiate and discuss their demands to have the recent tariff and fuel hikes reduced.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness news, the Chairman of Tema District Council of Labour, Wilson Agana, said the Organised Labour will decide on the next course of action after the meeting with the Labour Minister.
He said, “Let’s get there tomorrow and listen to them and then we will come back and plan ahead. The next plan of action, we will communicate to the whole Ghana.”
He added, he would be surprised if government did not yield to their demands following their protest and threats of strike action.
“… Nationwide strike and all those things and government will still not want to yield to what we are saying then I will be surprised,” Mr Agana said.
