Liverpool confirm Daniel Sturridge will be sidelined until September

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that striker Daniel Sturridge will be out of action until September after having hip surgery.

The England international traveled to the United States earlier this year for rehabilitation and then scored on his return against West Ham on January 31 but sustained a hip problem after scoring in Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester United on March 22.

He would later feature against Arsenal and Blackburn in April but has not made an appearances since.

The 25-year-old made only seven Premier League starts this season because of thigh, calf and hip problems.

On Tuesday, Sturridge had surgery in New York and told his fans on social media: “I just want to let the world know I’ve had a successful operation on my hip. Onwards and upwards from here. Thanks for the support.”

Today, during his pre-match press conference ahead of Liverpool’s match against Chelsea on Sunday, Brendan Rodgers confirmed the length of the striker’s absence from the squad.

“We anticipate Daniel will be back in training around September time and we are hopeful the issues he’s had have been resolved,” the manager said.

The 2015-16 Premier League seasons starts on August 8, so Sturridge will definitely be sidelined for the opening month of the campaign and will also miss a significant amount of time in September before he resumes training with the rest of the squad.
