Chelsea eyeing Abdul Rahman Baba

The Augsburg and Ghana defender could be set for a summer move to the Premier League giants

Ghana left-back Abdul Rahman Baba is the subject of transfer interest from Chelsea, with the Pensioners eyeing the Augsburg star ahead of a potential summer move.

According to L’Equipe, Jose Mourinho’s side are keen on the defender following his fine form in the Bundesliga and are considering a 15 million Euro-bid during the upcoming transfer window.

The 20-year-old moved to Augsburg in 2014 after spells with Asante Kotoko and Greuther Furth and has been one of the star performers during the Fuggerstadter’s successful campaign in Germany.

Markus Weinzierl’s side find themselves in sixth place after 31 matches, and with only three to play remain firmly in the hunt for an unlikely Europa League qualification spot.

Augsburg started the season poorly—with three straight defeats—but their fine form in November and the beginning of 2015 sees them ahead of the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Werder Bremen and Hoffenheim in the top flight.

Despite missing a month of action at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he started at left-back for the Black Stars as Avram Grant’s side made the tournament final, Baba has been one of the stars of Augsburg’s campaign.

Particularly eye-catching has been his offensive play; in 28 matches the defender has contributed four assists, and has impressed with his desire to carry the ball forward and provide width down the left.

However, his fine defensive work has underpinned Augsburg’s excellent campaign, and only one player in the division averages more tackles per game than the left-sider according to WhoScored.

It is this combination of attacking adventure and increasing defensive nous that has appealed to Mourinho, who may see Baba as a replacement for Filipe Luis, the former Atletico Madrid full-back who hasn’t impressed since moving from Spain last summer.

The Ghanaian would then be competing with Cesar Azpilicueta for a starting berth.

According to Metro, Chelsea may face competition for the player from Manchester City, who are also considering a move for the Black Star.
