2015 Was A Nightmare For Farmers

The 2014 National Best Farmer, Mr. George Asamoah has expressed his reservations about the 2015 farming season which he has described as never encouraging. He made these sentiments arising out of the inadequate rainfall which negatively affected crop farming last year.

In an interview with Mr. Asamoah on the Rite Morning Ride on Tuesday, he noted that ordinary people who were not farmers judged the rainfall pattern for the past year as adequate. Contrary to that, farmers on the other hand thought though the rains came last year at a point in time, it did not help much because it did not come at the right time for farmers.

Mr. Asamoah pointed out that this affected crops such as maize and that it was the backlog of the previous year, 2014 which has helped to sustain them, adding that 2015 has been a bad year for farmers.

He further advised the government to protect the foodstuff that we have now by spending to buy it and secure it at the Buffer Stock to help prevent any future needs. Mr. Asamoah observed that at open markets such as Techiman and Kintampo, farmers and traders were selling our maize to off to buyers from Niger and Burkina Faso. He has thus advised the government and individuals as well as institutions to patronize our maize since that will go a long way to help farmers.
