Teacher trainees of the Wesley College of Education in Kumasi who were protesting a University of Cape Coast directive for the withdrawal of students who failed in one subject were ‘whipped’ by personnel of the Ghana Police Service dispatched to the location to maintain peace.
Luv FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor reported from the school’s campus in Kumasi that the angry teacher trainees were beaten by the police without any provocation from the students.
“The students are here beating drums and singing songs to protest the decision of the school authorities and that has been the format of the demonstration, so they were shocked when the police charged on them…,” he reported.
The students’ demonstration follows similar ones from others in other teacher trainees including the Akrokeri and Mampong Colleges of Education.
The Akrokeri College of Education was closed down following student rioting.
The riots are in response to attempts by authorities to compel students who failed in certain subjects to leave school with the option of returning next year in September to re-sit the papers.
