By Krobea Asante Tofepa – Ntomentwene

Outspoken legal practitioner, Lawyer Maurice Ampaw has condemned that South Africa cannot lead corruption in the world stating categorically that, Ghana was supposed to lead the 2015 corruption Afro barometer conducted by the Transparency International. “We are now swimming in corruption”  He said with no regrets.

Ghana was ranked 2nd with South Africa leading the world for corruption. This according to Lawyer Maurice, the group that conducted the survey has been too lenient on Ghana describing it as a consideration to conceal our shame for not been loyal and trust worthy as a nation.

He made this remarks in an interview with Dr. Kennedy on rite FM morning ride, when he was asked to share his view on the corruption perception index released by the transparency international. According to him what we see and hear in the country recently attest to the fact that, Ghana is full of corrupt people who do not think about the repercussions of their dubious actions.

Referring matters, he opined that government’s white paper on judgment debts paid to non-deserving beneficiaries, the National Service Secretariat whopping saga and the recent Aras’s video on massive bribes by the judiciary are all indications of unwarranted corruption siphoning the country.

“The nation smells and corruption is everywhere, from the bottom to the top and even at the presidency is no exemption”, He added.

Lawyer Maurice maintained that, ministers of state and government officials begin to build mansions, drive in flashy and exorbitant vehicles few days after they are given opportunity to spearhead affairs of state which with no doubt is the cause for our ailing economy.

In a development, the aggrieved lawyer questions how on earth Sam George could defeat E.T Mensah, the Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram in the recent Presidential and Parliamentary Primaries, conducted by the ruling National Democratic Congress if not for money accrued illegally by he, Sam George and blown as campaign baits to delegates.

He expressed also that, corruption in Ghana is like a wild fire smoke and has finally find its way through all institutions because one need to pay to be admitted,  the police are everywhere pelting  drivers, teachers sleeping with students to award them marks, chiefs selling one land to numerous people, fake pastors deceiving people, journalists listening to one side of the story for personal gains, people buying educational certificates, 419 people setting up micro finance institutions to dupe indigents, coupled with soldiers escorting chainsaw operators to raid our forest reserve.

“I am afraid the way corruption has gained grounds in the country and everybody is liable to suffer its effect if we don’t find lasting solution to curb it” He concluded.
