Controversies arising from the propose site for the eastern university

The Eastern Regional University, which was a major campaign promise by the NDC, will be known as the University for “Sustainable Environmental Studies and Applied Science”. Currently, the bill for the establishment of the university is before the parliament, having gone through the second reading awaiting the third and final reading.

The University for Sustainable Environment Studies and Applied Research will have the main campus in Somanya, with a satellite campus at Donkokrom.

The proposed site for the Somanya campus is located at Akorley in the Yilo Krobo Municipality. An alleged family land belonging to one Nyenteh family is raising a lot of controversies in regards to the true ownership of the land and the transfer process of the land from the family to the state for the project.

According to Adoley Nyenteh a daughter of the Nyenteh family, they inherited the six hundred and twenty nine (629) acres of land from their father, the late Kwame Nyenteh and was shared by the family lawyer to the five children to her and other four siblings.

She revealed that after the distribution of the land, they decided to re-register the land in their names as the law demands but to their amazement, documents at the Koforidua branch of the lands commission  shows that, the land has been registered as a ‘’Government Compensated Land”  and they can’t register in their names.

Meanwhile, she noted, the family has not received any official letter from the government indicating their interest in their properties let alone paying them any sort of compensation. “No one has the right to register the family’s land whether you are a government official or the president of Ghana”. She chastised.

She lamented she will not hesitate to file a suit against the government if their property is unlawfully taken from them. “it is a total cheat by the government” she mourned!
