Bawku: 4 injured, 5 arrested in Mosque renovation brawl

The Bawku Divisional Police Command in the Upper East Region has arrested five suspects involved in the sporadic shooting on Sunday night, that left four persons injured and currently on admission at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital.

Narrating the incident to Citi News, Bawku Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Tefutor Kaletsi, said a disagreement between some community members of Puusum and one Mallam Alhaji Abubakari over a renovation of Alhaji Abubakari’s private mosque on a disputed piece of land, was the cause of the violence.

He said when his attention was drawn to the matter; he engaged the Chief Imam of the area, and spoke to the parties involved to remain calm as they take steps to resolve the matter, but that fell on deaf ears.

“Around 10:30pm on Sunday, we heard gun shots at a part of Bawku known as Puusum where there is an old land issue between one Mallam Alhaji Abubakari and some members of the community. He [Mallam Alhaji Abubakari] is just renovating his private mosque by building it with blocks so a group of people from the community asked him to stop the construction works, so when I got the information, I contacted the chief Imam there to help resolve the matter and also spoke to the parties involved to remain calm so that urgent steps would be taken to resolve the matter amicably.”

“…But it so happened that, the group of community members went to the home of Abubakari and amidst gunshots and machetes attacked his family and wounded three people. So a joint military-police team swiftly responded and brought the situation under control. For now, the place is calm, however there are four people who are injured and are responding to treatment at the Bawku Hospital and we have also arrested five people who we are interrogating.”

He said they have some more names they are pursuing for interrogation and possible arrest. Mr. Keletsi appealed to the residents to use lawful means to get their issues addressed.
