YFM presenter abduction saga: One arrested for posting pictures, three on the run

One of the four suspects who have been linked to the alleged abduction and rape of the Takoradi-based radio presenter has been arrested by the police.

The suspect, Nelson Williams, an 18-year-old painter, was arrested in a hotel at Abossey Okai in Accra.

The police say Williams, alias Iddrisu, was apprehended a day after the nude pictures of the woman at the centre of the incident went viral on social media on April 13, 2015.

The three other suspects, including a woman, are currently on the run.

Last Monday, nude pictures of Adelaide Onyinyechie Ayoka, popularly known as Princess Ada, and others of her dreadlocks being cut by a man while two others held her firmly to the ground, were widely circulated on social media.

Messages accompanying the pictures claimed she had been abducted by some men and raped. She was found a day later in a traumatised condition.

Though it was speculated that she had been abducted in Takoradi in the Western Region where she worked as a presenter for YFM, the police have confirmed that the pictures were shot in a hotel room in Accra.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Alhassan Ahmed Mohammed, has directed that the case be transferred to Accra.

Briefing

Briefing journalists yesterday, the Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mrs Effia Tenge, said the police were investigating the matter.

She added that during interrogation, Williams denied sexually assaulting Princess Ada since “everything that happened on the said date was done with her consent.”

Williams, he said, told the police that he was asked by Princess Ada to take those pictures which were to be sent to her  boyfriend who had jilted her and gone for another woman.

The pictures were meant to convince her boyfriend that his new girlfriend was behind her abduction and torture.

Mrs Tenge said Williams also claimed he was a friend of Ada and as such was not paid for his role.

Cooperation

She said the management of the hotel where the incident took place were cooperating with the police in their investigations.

The parents of the woman at the centre of the case, she added, were also supporting the police to get to the bottom of the matter.

Though Princess Ada has a Nigerian name, Mrs Tenge explained that her parents were Ghanaians, but she had been adopted by a Nigerian at a very young age.

She also said Princess Ada was currently in a traumatic condition and unable to tell her side of the story.

During a visit to the Police Hospital the victim was seen on admission, under the watchful eyes of the police.

Two armed policemen stood by her bed while she slept.

Fate of suspects

Mrs Tenge gave the assurance that the police would not compromise professionalism while investigating the matter.

“All suspects implicated in this conspiracy, which tends to beat the imagination of the average human mind, will be arraigned. With the courts being the arbiter of justice, we believe the various actors in the case will be given a fair ground for them to tell their stories,” she added.
