Yara to train farmers in fertiliser application

Yara Ghana Limited, a leading fertiliser distribution company in Ghana, is to provide and equip Ghanaian farmers with relevant training in the application of fertiliser and other best practices.

It said providing technical service was embedded in its philosophy to give added value to all farmers, by assigning its agronomists across the country to work closely with the farmers to ensure high yield and quality.

The Commercial Manager of the company, Mr Sergio Gordoy, said the company was focused on serving farmers with added value fertiliser solution for their crops.

“Yara cares about farmers and is committed to partner them to achieve good yields and add value to their produce,” he said during a tour of the harbour on the arrival of 15,000 tons of YaraMilla Actyva (NPK) fertiliser ship from Finland.

He said Yara’s products were available in the open market to enable farmers, who have just started planting for the season, to get access to the product in any quantity.

YaraMilla is the brand name for Yara’s premium NPK range of products. It started bringing in fertiliser in January, March, May and end of June this year.

Mr Gordoy explained that timing in fertiliser distribution and application was important, such that Yara brought in tailor-made fertiliser in significant volumes to meet the needs of crop farmers and that its fertiliser could be applied to all kind of crops.

He said the rate of application was still small and that it was important for farmers to be advised on how to choose the correct fertiliser that had a combination of the right nutrients.

“It’s a matter of correct nutrients, correct time and solubility of the fertiliser. The soils in Ghana need more magnesium and especially sulphur compared with others, so it’s important for farmers to use the right fertiliser,” he said.

He advised all stakeholders, including farmers, researchers, policy makers, agricultural officers and distributors/retailers, to ensure the effective use of fertiliser.

In order to increase the knowledge and maintain awareness of the benefits of using SULFANTM, the company organised another campaign in 2011 in the northern zone.
