WE LOST 70% OF OUR PRODUCE – MANGO FARMERS

What was supposed to be a bumper harvest with profit for mango farmers has rather turned sour for the famers in Yilo Krobo, Manya Krobo, Dangme West and other districts in the eastern region recording losses in this year’s major season due to low export?

Speaking on the “Akuafo Si Sen” segment on Rite FM’s Morning Ride, the Board chairman for FMSL multi-media Mr. Narh Davies Korboe said, they have recorded about 70% loss of their produce because the main buyers In Europe refused to import more of the queen fruit from Ghana this year as a result of the bad weather conditions.

He stated that even though the local market absorbed majority of their harvest, it was not enough to save the situation as this major season saw bumper harvest, adding that Blue Skies and other local processing companies reduced the quantity of mangoes they usually buy from the farmers and this also contributed to the loss affecting them badly.

He further stated that the pack house encountered some challenges and that has caused the reduction in this year’s exportation to the foreign countries but they hope to recover their losses in the minor season. He noted.
