We Have Still Not Heard From Government – AZOFFA

By Austin Ofori Addo

Vice president for the Akosombo Zone Fish Farmers Association (AZOFFA) on the Volta Lake, Mr. Godfred Alimo has revealed that President John Mahama has still not come to their aid after harmful chemicals were spilled into the Volta Lake about four years ago and which resulted in the killing of all of their fishes.

According to Mr. Alimo, the grave losses have compelled a lot of the affected farmers to pack cages down since they were devastated due to the heavy investments they made. He said he and his colleagues continue to lament over their losses because they have received absolutely no assistance even after writing several letters to the fisheries ministry.

He emphasized that a report after the incident indicated that three harmful chemicals were spilled onto the surface of the lake. According to him, what is expected of the Environmental Protection Agency was for them to pick up the report and track the source of the destructive chemical.

Mr. Alimo was worried that though the report is out, they have no idea whether the pollution came from the Akosombo Textiles Limited, ATL or the Volta River Authority. He has therefore tasked the EPA to act on the report to forestall any future occurrences.
