WAATCO to set up plant for agric implements

The West Africa-Agro Tech Company Ghana Limited (WAATCO) is to establish an assembly plant for agricultural implements at Kutunse near Pokuase in Accra.

Work on the first phase of the project  estimated to cost 24 million dollars would commence in June.

Already a large quantity of implements for combine harvesters, ploughs and threshers imported into the country by the company are being assembled at the Agriculture Engineering Services Department of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

Briefing the Daily Graphic at the project site in Accra, Mr Akoliya Patel, the Managing Director of WAATCO, said  600 skilled Ghanaian workers would be employed, adding that a number of them would be sent to India to receive training on repairing and fixing of agricultural machinery.

Engineers

He said engineers were already in the country for the construction and installation of the plant and also to provide training for the employees.

According to him, a training centre would be opened in three cities – Accra, Kumasi and Tamale – to train the unskilled youth.

He said plans were also advanced to open showrooms, service stations and spare parts depots in all the 10 regions to supply agricultural implements to farmers at affordable prices.

“It is a dream to be here to work in Ghana to partner the rural people, share knowledge and bring hope to them by providing them with the necessary skills and tools,” he stated.
