Veterinary Workers On Strike

Following several months of agitations over poor conditions of service by the Veterinary Medical Technical Association Of Ghana (VEMTAG) and threats to embark on a strike if things remained the same, the group has finally carried out its threats.

The Veterinary Medical Technical Association Of Ghana (VEMTAG) has embarked on a nationwide sit down strike to convey their message in the strongest possible terms yet to press home their demands.

Speaking to Mr. Isaac Nyumuteye, who doubles as VEMTAG’s Chief Technical Officer for Lower Manya as well as the Public Relations Officer for in both Yilo, Lower and Upper Manya Krobo on Rite FM, he said they had informed the government about three month ago about some of their needs which the government had consistently turned a blind eye to. But that is not all as the group is equally fighting for their position on the Single Spine Salary Structure.

According to Mr. Nyumuteye, another challenge which was confronting them was the lack of logistics to enable them carry on with their work effectively. He added that they met the stake holders of the Fair Wages Commission over the issue but which has yielded not much.

He explained that one of the functions of the VEMTAG is to attend to both public and animal health. He further explained that their job as Public Health officials is to inspect meat meant for consumption as well as imported live animals. This according to Mr. Nyumuteye, is why their strike will have dire implications on the health of the consuming public.

Another effect, he said shall include the absence of VEMTAG to attend to sick animals such as poultry, pig, cattle, etc.
