Total station closed down for fuel leakage

It followed intelligence gathered by the operatives that there was a major leakage on one of the hoses of the pumps at the station.
When the security team got to the scene and pretended to buy fuel, it was realised that the main pump was seriously leaking.
It was observed that a bowl had been placed under the pump to collect the fuel that leaked from the pump onto the floor.
Some electrical cables were exposed as the fuel dripped onto the floor.
Some parts of the station were rusted and close to combustible materials, including a number of car tyres which had been arranged on the floor of the station.
The operation was prompted by the recent explosion at the GOIL Filling Station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra on June 3, 2015, during which more than 150 people lost their lives and several others sustained severe injuries.
Although the management of the Tema fuel station claimed that they had closed down the station after detecting the fault, it was observed that vehicles had formed queues to buy fuel.
Before the team moved in to close the station, it drove through the main street of the market and saw vehicles filling their tanks.

According to Mr Peter Kuwornu, the Manager at the station, he had notified the head office about the problem.
He confirmed the leakage and said efforts were being made to put pressure on the head office to correct the problem.
A source at the National Security Secretariat told the Daily Graphic that the team would continue to monitor activities at all fuel stations to ensure that operators of the stations adhered to standards.
It appealed to residents and traders to be careful at fuel stations and report any dangers they observed to security operatives.
“The nation is in a state of mourning and people are recklessly putting the lives of others in danger. We must avoid more disasters,” it said.
