Too many hunters a threat to wildlife

By Saddath Asiamah

Hunting continues to remain one of the occupations of many in the country including Mr. Ebenezer Arthur who is a hunter at Jasikan in the Volta Region. He tells Rite news that “hunting has been my occupation since childhood.”

But he has an issue with the number of people who are jumping into the ‘game’ of hunting. Mr. Arthur believes that the high numbers of hunters was a threat to wildlife and urged the government to regulate their activities or ban the practice altogether in order to preserve wildlife.

In an interview with Rite news, Mr. Ebenezer narrates some of his hunting exhibitions. As an astute hunter, he takes pride in what he’s able to return home with from the bush. According to him, he’s always successful in his exhibitions and that even on a bad day; he’s still able to return home with no less three varieties of animals. Sometimes on a rough day when game is difficult to find, he camps in the bushes for three to four days before he comes back home.

He said he has no fear being alone in the forest because it takes a lot of courage to be a successful hunter. But he recounts one incident that left him eerie and scared to the bone. Mr. Arthur narrates how he once met a stranger in the thick of the forest around 12:30 am. He gathered courage to greet the stranger who ignored him without a word. This according to him was one incident that scared him as a hunter.
