BY: Richard Dankwa

The Chairman of the Ghana National Tomato Traders and Transport Association (GNTTTA), Mr. Eric Osei Kuffour has described as shameful and reprehensible, the practice of importing tomatoes from Burkina Faso into the country. According to him, Ghana as a nation has done well in tomato production but it’s rather unfortunate that the leaders of the country are not investing into it.

‘It is very shameful for Burkina Faso as a country to supply us with seventy trucks load of fresh tomatoes daily even though the two countries share the same weather condition as well as same soil structure and profile, Mr. Kufuor regretted woefully.

Mr. Karim who also described the act as reprehensible noted that though Ghana boasts of being an independent country, its leaders have failed to implement policies governing the agric sector.

Mr. Osei who was speaking to Rite news disclosed that government in 2014 launched the Ghana National Climate Change Policy which aimed at helping the government to address the issue of climate change, litigation, adaptation and social development. He also disclosed that the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) has also launched the National Climate Smart Agriculture and Food Security Action Plan which will be implemented between 2016 and 2020.

He explained that these policies are to govern the government to address the issues relating to climate change in the country. According to him, aside all these policies which are being implemented, government has also instituted a program with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture called the Ghana Agricultural Sector Investment Project (GASIP). He added that under the GASIP is an awareness creation on climate change adaptation in the three northern regions of Ghana.
