Taxi Drivers Complain About Bad Roads

Taxi drivers and the GPRTU in charge of the Akuse station in Somanya in the Eastern Region are complaining bitterly about the nature of the Somanya to Akuse road as well as the deplorable nature of the lorry station and have threatened to embark on a serious demonstration against those involved.

In an interview with the drivers, they complained badly about the deplorable nature of the station and the somanya to Akuse road which lies in ruins. They said whenever it rained, the station became muddy. That is not all; they further complained that they are overwhelmed with the dust during the dry season which makes their operations difficult.

They added that the road was in a bad state which led to the frequent breakdown of their cars. They said spare parts were very costly which after repairs left them with very little profits. They said they had called on the attention of the authorities but to no avail and so the only option left for them was to demonstrate against the authorities since that is the only language they understand.

In the interview, some of the drivers also lamented on the high taxes they paid.

The station chairman of the GPRTU when contacted on the issue said that their present stay at their current location was temporary because the Yilo Krobo District Assembly has warned them to move to the main station at Akutunya because the station falls under the construction of the Akuse-Somanya road.

On the issue of drivers charging exorbitantly during the evenings, the chairman added that he was aware that in the evenings some drivers charged more than the approved fares. He however added that drivers have given the excuse that they do this because they hardly get passengers when returning from Akuse to Somanya.
