Sugar Cane Farmers Decry Lack of Market for Their Produce

Sugar cane farmers in Senchi in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region are “crying” for market for their sugar cane after harvest.

One Janet Mensah who spoke to Prince Paul Amuzu, a Rite FM journalist said; unavailability of market for their harvest affect payment of loans they contract from financial institution for their farming investment.

Agriculture is touted the bed rock of the economy: Madam Janet Mensah advised government to prioritize and invest into the sector fully.

“Government only pays attention to some particular types of farming and neglects others such as the sugar cane farming which should not be the case.”

The farmers laid off their frustration, saying government has been silence on sugar cane production let alone thinking of market for their sugar cane product after harvest.

They therefore pleaded with the government to give attention to sugar cane industry and invest so sugar cane cultivators can produce more in commercial quantities.

Sugar cane farming in Ghana supports over 200,000 small-scale farmers. In addition, an estimated six million Ghanaians derived their livelihood directly or indirectly from the sugar cane industry.

Domestic production of sugar saves the nation about two million dollars in foreign exchange.

Sugar cane is grown in fairly flat regions which include the Central Region sugar-cane belt extending from Komenda through Agona and Swedru to Winneba near Ellimina.

It is also grown in Savelugu, Volta Region and certain parts of Eastern Region.
