Students Of MAKROSEC Consider Future Careers In Agriculture

As the need to address the agitating issue of post graduate unemployment in the country persists, some stakeholders in the industry have continually questioned and suggested the need for young people to take a decisive step into the field of agriculture and crate a living out of it. As sad as the story holds today, not many graduates would voluntarily consider a career in agric-business.

Could it be that agriculture is not being presented at the basic level as a fair employment opportunity in our schools? Perhaps this story could have been different if the spirit of agriculture was inculcated in our young people, especially to appreciate agriculture as a viable employment opportunity.

Rite FM therefore took it upon itself to speak to a few students to find out their interests in agriculture and whether they would appreciate a career in agribusiness.

Rite news reporter, Felicia Sarfoa therefore made a stop at the Manya Krobo Senior High School to engage some agricultural Science students to find out their views on what future they would consider with agriculture during life after school.

Most of them expressed the desire to engage in agriculture as an employment option while acknowledging that agriculture comes with a lot of job opportunities. To others, farming is not only about crop farming.

Miss Ninson Ama Judith, Girls prefect of the Manya Krobo Senior High School who emerged winner in the Blue Skies Green Club end of year award ceremony in December, on her part explained that the study of agriculture was not only limited to crops but covered a lot including Agronomy, Soil Science as well as Animal Science.

Soliciting his views on the subject, Head of Agric Department of the school, Mr. Sally Doya advised parents to motivate and encourage their wards to consider pursuing programmes in agriculture at the school and not only be obsessed with the Arts and Sciences because agriculture offers several job opportunities.

He said he was particularly pleased with the enthusiasm of his students in the agriculture science subject.
