Somanya Market Women Threaten To Embark On Naked Demonstration Against MCE

Market women at Somanya have given the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Yilo Krobo, Hon Ebenezer Tetteh Kupualor three weeks ultimatum to complete a market facility the Assembly started since July last year.

According to them, the MCE at the sod cutting ceremony promised to complete the market within two months to shed 80 market women, but the project is at a stand still after eight months.

“The MCE promised us to complete  this market within two months but look, the contractors are not even on site to complete the project. We have been moved from our original places waiting for the completion of the market but we have been left under the mercies of the sun and the rain,” they lamented.

The market women who are ready to demand their due of development in the market, have hinted to petition the Regional Minister as well as the President over the failed promise made by the MCE. 

In the failure of the above actions, The market women have also declared to stage a naked demonstration to further register their displeasure.

“We are ready to go on naked demonstration if they fail to hear our cry after taken the necessary measures to inform the appropriate authorities involve about our challenge,” they said.  

  Hon. Ebenezer Tetteh Kupualor on Monday 1st July, 2019 caught sod for the construction of 80 market sheds at the Akutunya central market in the Municipal capital, Somanya.

The expansion project when completed will give face-lift to the current state of the market constructed under the Military era and, had since not received any expansion.

Hon. Ebenezer Tetteh Kupualor addressing the gathering at the sod cutting ceremony assured market women, traditional leadership and the general public of his maximum commitment to complete this important project within the last 2 calendar months after July, 2019, as promised by the contractor.

The Hon. MCE continued to state that “this is one of the projects born out of the special infrastructure development initiative by the ruling government named 1 million dollars per constituency, which the Yilo Krobo Constituency is currently having several projects at different stage of completion.”

The market expansion project, the MCE said is costing the tax payer GHC199, 000 and was expected to be completed in October last year.

The Queen Mother of the Akutunya Market, Manye Mameyo Banahene applauded Hon. Ebenezer Tetteh Kupualor and the government under the leadership of President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for responding to the physical structure situation of the Akutunya market after the sod cutting ceremony.
