Saturday July 18, 2015 has been announced as the date for the celebration of this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr by the National Chief Imam and the Ameer and Missionary in charge of Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission as well as the National Hilal Committee (NHC) of Ghana.
Eid-ul-Fitr is an Islamic festival celebrated to mark the end of Ramadan, a month long fasting period for Muslims.
A statement from the office of the NHC signed by its chairman, Sheik Mahmoud Gedel wished the nation a Happy Eid-ul-Fitr.
The end of Ramadan, a fourth pillar of Islam is determined by the sight of the moon on the 29th day of fasting. However, fasting continues to the 30th day if the moon is not sighted on the 29th.
In Ghana, the Muslim community is waiting to sight the moon on Thursday evening to determine the end of Ramadan.
This means that if the moon is sighted on Thursday night, there will be no fasting on Friday. But fasting will have to continue on Friday if the moon is not sighted.
Meanwhile, a statement from the Ministry of Interior has declared Monday, July 20, 2015 as a statutory holiday because the Eid-ul-Fitr falls on a weekend.
“The general public is hereby, informed that Monday 20th July 2015, has been declared a public holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.”
