Poor Rainfall Has Affected Us

By Austin Ofori:

Farmers across the country continue to brood over poor crop yields this year primarily due to poor rains as a result of the climate change. In an interview with Mr. Samuel Cole, a maize, cassava, plantain, and oil palm farmer at Akuapem North in the Eastern Region on Friday’s Morning Ride, he said the poor rains this year have been a really big worry and disappointment to them and which has hindered their farming activities this year.

He added that they depended mainly on the rains for their farms in the absence of irrigational plants.

According to Mr. Cole, they have no access to ready markets for their product which invariably leads to traders taking that opportunity to cheat them. He further cautioned of a severe famine if relevant steps are not taken to address this problem as soon as possible.

He said foodstuffs were in short supply in the Akuapem-North district, adding that even maize which used to be very common and main staple food among the people was now becoming scarce.
