Poor Packaging Is A Threat To The Rice Sector –Rice Farmers

By Austin Ofori-Addo:

A rice farmer at Akuse in the Manya Krobo municipality of the Eastern region, Madam Catherine Norvi Sogbadzi has observed that poor packaging of locally produced rice is a threat to the rice sector since packaging places a big role in the marketing of their produce.

According to madam Norvi who was speaking on Rite FM’s Agrotech, most Ghanaians always looked at the packaging of the rice before deciding on whether to buy or not. This according to her is one of the major threats to their sector and not the problem of stones and other foreign materials in the local rice.

Her assertions come on the back of equipment which she said helps in de-stoning the rice and other materials, leaving the packaging as the only problem they are confronted with. ‘Most rice farmer are not discerning when choosing sacks for the packaging which makes their rice unattractive as compared to the foreign rice.’

Madam Norvi who said the problem was a nationwide issue revealed that though they were offered an opportunity to register for poly sack, the high cost of the process prevented them from registering, leaving them with no choice but to continue to do the packaging without any decorations.
