Yvonne Nelson, Sarkodie, Lydia Forson and others were accused of doing the bidding of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) – an accusation they have flatly rejected.
Last week, authorities of the University of Ghana and managers of the Total Ghana, owners of On-The-Run, turned down requests by organizers of the vigil to use their premises as the convergence point for the event.
Both outfits stated the organizers had no permission to use their premises.
The Ga Traditional Council petitioned the Greater Accra Regional Police Command to stop the vigil.
Joy News’ Kwakye Afreh Nuamah reported that the police put the permit on hold after a meeting with Nana Kwasi Awuah and Kofi Bentil, lawyers for the celebrities.
According to him, the meeting was not conclusive use of uncertainty over whether the venue for the vigil falls within the jurisdiction of the Ga Traditional Council.
The organisers are contending that it does not. They argue the area falls within the La Traditional Council.
The police are expected to meet representatives of the traditional councils Tuesday after which they will be able to take a definite position on the permit for the vigil.
