Pioneer Food supports school feeding programme

The donation was by the Pioneer Food Cannery Ltd, a company operating within the Ghana Free Zones enclave, at the request of the ministry.

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Ms Sherry Ayittey, handed over the items to the Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), Nii Lante Vanderpuye, in Accra.

According to Ms Ayittey, MoFAD became very much concerned about the nutritional status of children, following a report that they lacked the needed nutrition.

She said the fish products would help to enhance the quality of food and provide balanced diet for the children and also reverse protein deficiency among them.

She appealed to the caterers to not sell the items but rather use them to prepare food for the schoolchildren.

Monitoring of items

Receiving the items on behalf of the GSFP, Mr. Vanderpuye said the donation was timely as women were struggling to get the needed items to prepare food for the children.

He said MLGRD would monitor the beneficiary schools to ensure that the items were not diverted but used for the intended purpose.

According to him, the GSFP was not only meant for feeding the schoolchildren but was also intended to retain them in school.

He urged companies and other benevolent organisations to emulate the shining example of the Pioneer Food Cannery Ltd.
