By Nyarko Francis

The Constitutional Review Commission is a Presidential commission set up in January 2010 by the late President of the Republic of Ghana, Professor John Evans Atta Mills to consult with the people of Ghana on the operations of the 1992 Constitution and on any changes that need to be made in the constitution.

The Commission was tasked to present a draft bill for the amendment of the Constitution in the event     that any changes are warranted.

The Government on 15th of June 2012 issued a White Paper approving most of the Commission’s recommendations.

In view of this a non-governmental organization, Law and Development Associates (LADA) in partnership with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) held a two days’ workshop at Marigold Hotel in Kumasi of the Ashanti Region on the need for the public to be educated on the upcoming referendum on the Commission recommendation wether certain chapters in the constitution should be change or not.

Addressing the participants during the workshop, Lawyer Harold Tirah Atuguba at LADA Institute said the Commission has finished with its work but what delays the releasing of the report he said, has to do with the court suit filed against the legality of the Commission, stating that the court has ruled in favour of the Commission hence Ghanaians be made aware of the recommendations and their reactions on the referendum ahead.

He added that the National Commission for Civic education (NCCE) needs to be supported with logistics to effectively execute their well by reaching out to all people at the grassroots level.

Rite news spoke to some of the participants after the programme and they were of the view that, the training they had will help equip them in educating the public on the constitutional review process and the referendum ahead.

The workshop was funded by OSIWA West Africa, a donor partner to LADA.
