Over Reliance On Rain Cause Of Cassava Shortage

By Felicia Sarfoa:

In the face of the recent shortage of some staple foods on the market, particularly cassava, Mr. Shakespeare Dzokoto who is an agronomist and agric consultant has explained on Rite FM’s Akuafo Sesen that the shortage of cassava in the system has largely been due the fact that farmers over relied on the rains for their farming. According to him, once the rains failed them, then it became a big problem.

Mr. Dzokoto observed that most farmers after planting the cassava ignored any further attentions it might need such as water. This according to him is because most farmers erroneously believe that cassava does need enough water for its survival.

He also pointed out that farmers refuse to weed the crops but leaving them to their fate in the bush.

The agronomist further admonished farmers to take the cultivation of cassava seriously. The reason for the shortage, he contends is due to the fact that some farmers don’t give cassava the necessary attention like they do other crops, rather basking in the false belief that it will mature on its own, something that is not the case.

The poor rain fall pattern has affected farmers a lot in the country which has led to the shortage of cassava on the market.
