A private legal practitioner, Bright Akwetey has charged the courts to order undercover investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas to arrest criminals who have been freed as part of his investigative piece.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosi Sen Thursday, he said criminals who have been ‘fortunately’ freed by the indicted judges, will end up endangering the lives of people in the society if they are not caught, a situation he describes as very worrying.
“Anas’ methods used in his investigation rather ended up encouraging and releasing criminals back into the system. Does he want these armed robbers to continue robbing and killing people? In fact, we don’t want that and so he should go and arrest them back to where they belong.
“How can a whole lawyer like him (Anas Aremeyaw Anas) knowing very well that giving bribes is against the laws of the country go ahead and give bribe just to set free a criminal who is supposed to rot in jail” he questioned.
The implicated judges include 22 magistrates of the lower courts and 12 Justices of the High Court.
They were captured in a 500-hour audiovisual footage, either negotiating, or receiving bribes in different circumstances, over different cases, to free criminals.
The twenty-two magistrates have been suspended by the Chief Justice, as a five-member committee set up by the Judicial Council investigates their conduct.
All 22 have filed a writ seeking an interlocutory injunction on the committee’s hearing. They argue that the disciplinary action launched against them is not lawful.
The 12 Justices are also fighting, through the courts, the evidence and impeachment processes unrolled against them by the Judicial Council.
The Judges were seen in the video, either negotiating or accepting money as well as tubers of yam, and livestock as bribes.
Meanwhile some Ghanaians who watched the documentary on Tuesday and Wednesday expressed shock at how the Judges could stoop so low in their quest to pervert justice.
But Bright Akwetey questioned the modus operandi employed by investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas in uncovering the alleged bribery in the judiciary.
He is of the view that the ace investigative journalist invaded the privacy of the judges and lured them; therefore he (Anas) should not be exempted from the allegations leveled against the judges.
“Nobody is above the law in this country, except the President when he is still in office, so Anas needs to play his cards very well,” he stressed.
