Nuclear Power Institute to Launch Project in 2029 – 2030

By Ivy Agbozo:

Experts from the Nuclear Power Institute have given the strongest indication yet of their determination to introduce mass nuclear power generation in Ghana by teasing that the official launch of the project is expected to take place between 2029 and 2030.

The institute which is a directorate under the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission is working on a project which would focus on generating electricity through nuclear energy.

The initiative as explained by Dr. Stephen Yamoah, Deputy Director of NPI is to ensure that electricity is generated at a higher rate and cheaper cost since the hydro and thermal forms of energy have a much limited electricity generation rate and comes at a higher cost to consumers.

He added that using nuclear energy to generate electricity is a much safer form of energy generation as the entire process would be under constant check by the International Atomic Agency and the GAEC.
