The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has lost its focus, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Kofi Portuphy has said.
“I still cannot come to terms with the NPP’s accusations that the NDC is behind the raid of the NPP headquarters. How can a serious party make such a claim? Why should anybody vote for a party that blames the opposition for its internal woes?” he asked.
Speaking to journalist after he attended a church event in Accra last Sunday, he reasoned, “the comment from the acting Chairman of the NPP, Mr Freddie Blay, is an indication that the party had lost its reason for existing and thereby becoming a dangerous party to vote for in the 2016 elections.”
Mr Blay, at a press conference in Accra recently, accused the government and the National Security of masterminding a dawn raid at the party’s headquarters at Asylum Down.
According to him, the government was using state institutions to destabilise the party, adding that a careful review of the invasion of the party’s head office and its Annex at Kokomlemle by armed men in military uniform and subsequent evidence proved that it was conducted by the state in order to destroy the fortunes of the NPP.
The government, in a statement by the Communications Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, rejected the accusations, saying the party had failed to provide a scintilla of evidence to back its claims.
Mr Portuphy said instead of the leadership of the NPP coming together to address the division and attacks among themselves, the party was rather looking for external factors to blame.
“I honestly pity the party for making such comments and all others it had issued in the wake of the attacks,” he said.
Mr Portuphy said the NDC had no time to react to the needless allegations levelled against it, adding that “we are focused on the betterment of the Ghanaian citizens and the economy”.
He said unlike the NPP, the NDC was a better and well-organised party which has the enhancement of the economy as its main goal.
Commenting on the party’s recently held primaries, Mr Portuphy said the peaceful atmosphere in which the NDC organised its primaries revealed how solid and well-organised the leadership and the members were.
“Have you heard violence and personal attacks taking the centre stage of our party? It won’t happen under our leadership,” he said.
According to Mr Portuphy, Ghana could only realise and achieve its development goals under a competent party and peaceful atmosphere.
“Clearly, the NPP doesn’t have those qualities,” he quipped.
