Nobody is too big to be a polling agent – Afari-Djan

Chair of the Electoral Commission says political parties must appoint the best personnel as agents to monitor elections rather than cry foul after elections with half-baked agents.

Addressing a training session of electoral officers at Ho in the Volta Region, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Djan said the EC will take responsibility for the training of its officers whilst the political parties do same for its agents.

“Nobody is too big to be an agent,” he said, recounting how the former first lady Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings and former Agric Minister Kwamena Ahwoi played the role of polling agents in one of the national elections.

“If you know how important this agency work is, you will get the best people,” he indicated.

The New Patriotic Party challenged the results of the 2012 elections in court citing a number of irregularities in the elections.

Some of those irregularities which were noticed during the court hearing came as a result of mistakes by polling agents.

Dr.  Afari Gyan said polling agency is “an intellectual work. Let’s take the agency business serious,” he admonished.

As part of preparation towards the 2016 elections, the Electoral Commission says it is modifying the pink sheets to make future elections more credible.

The EC says the modification is one of the recommendations it is implementing after the court case.
