New Variety Of Rice Will Increase Production –MOFA

By Nyarko Francis:

Several new varieties of different crops are being introduced onto the Ghanaian market and to Ghanaian farmers all in a bid to increase crop yield and help farmers reap maximum benefits. In view of this the Crop Research Institute of Ghana, CRIG has released new varieties of rice onto the Ghanaian market known as AGRA which is highly drought resistant.

Rite news thus spoke to the Municipal Development Officer at the Department of Agriculture in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly, Mr. Joseph Gazaley who explained that this new variety will help the farmers to increase their production because of its high yield, adding that this type is resistant to rice black a disease associated with rice farming.

He discounted claims that the new varieties taste poorly, stressing that these are palatable which farmers as well as consumers would testify to. He said rice production was increasing and improving gradually due to the ban on the inland importation of rice, a directive by the government. This according to him has resulted in rice farmers now getting ready markets for their produce which has attracted a lot of rice farmers into the rice farming sector.
