My grandpa defiled me three times – 9-year-old narrates ordeal from hospital bed

“My grandma often sent me to him for money and in the process, he slept with me,” said a nine-year-old victim defiled by her grandmother’s husband from her hospital bed at the Atua government hospital in the eastern region where she was receiving treatment to correct a badly damaged anal region through which her abuser defiled her multiple times.

Following the abuse, an Odumase-Krobo circuit court has remanded the suspect into prison custody to reappear on Thursday September 19, 2019.

The 53-year-old suspect, Peter Appiah allegedly took advantage of his wife’s request to give the victim money, and allegedly defiled the granddaughter on three occasions, within a two-week period, through the anus and the vagina and threatened to kill her should she disclose the act to anybody, as narrated by the victim and her mother.

“He defiled me on three occasions when my grandmother sent me to him for money. I didn’t report his conduct because he threatened to kill me if I did,” said the 9-year-old victim. “I feel severe pains in my anus.”

Mother of the victim, Esther Nkrumah who disclosed the ordeal of the primary school pupil said she first detected that her daughter was unwell on Thursday, 22nd August 2019. She continued that after her condition failed to improve despite treating her at home, she was compelled to send her daughter to a hospital where she was admitted until Monday, 26th August, 2019.

“Prior to taking her to the hospital, she always screamed at night of someone threatening to kill her should she disclose her ordeal to anybody, that the person is approaching with a knife, etc.” Mrs. Nkrumah recounted.

The distraught mother who said the condition of her daughter further deteriorated in the hospital said based on the advice of a friend, she together with her mother (the accused’s wife) and a nurse questioned the victim intensely where she finally opened up and disclosed her ordeal.

The juvenile was often sent by her grandmother to take money from the suspect who is a security man with the Zoe International School in Somanya during which period he defiled her on various occasions.

The victim, following this disclosure was nevertheless discharged from the hospital on Monday, 26th August, 2019 where the family lodged a complaint with the police.

On Saturday, August 31, 2019, five days after her discharge, the complainant said she was awakened in the night by her husband after he detected that her daughter was discharging from her private part.

“Upon examination, we realized that she was not discharging from her vagina but, her anus instead. We also detected that there is serious injury to her anal region,” Esther Nkrumah narrated, a situation she said prompted the family to rush her to the Somanya Polyclinic from where she was referred to the Atua government hospital.

Doctors at the Atua government hospital, after assessing the damage caused to the private part and anus of the victim have referred her to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where she is currently receiving treatment.

The damage caused her anus as a result of the act has compelled the victim to wear pampers to prevent her from soiling herself.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP Isaac Otsin in charge of the Somanya Police Command who confirmed the incident said his outfit received a complaint from the victim’s father, Emmanuel Nkrumah on the conduct of Appiah Kubi, leading to his subsequent arrest.

According to DSP Otsin, the nine-year-old suffered serious injuries to her vagina and anus as a result of the act.

Mr. Appiah is reported to have evaded arrest until his arrest on Tuesday, September 3, 2019.

The police commander who said the suspect was being processed for court soon, cautioned parents particularly mothers to keep a close eye on their children to enable them detect any abnormalities in their behavior.
