MOFAD cautioned the general public to desist from sand winning along seashores

The Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Development (MOFAD), Ms. Sherry Ayitey has cautioned the general public to desist from sand winning activities along the seashores because it is posing serious threats to the ecology system and social life.

Ms. Ayitey speaking to Rite news in an interview to mark the world environment day today observed that there are a lot of people including building contractors collecting sand from the seashore adding that these bad activities can lead to soil erosion.

She noted that, the storm from the sea can move through the nearby fishing communities along the sea and it can lead to flood, if they continue to do the sand winning.

Ms. Ayitey has also called on the municipal and the district assemblies to stop giving out permit to individuals and construction companies who collect sand at the seashore.

She has advocated that, planting coconut trees along the seashore is of good, therefore, the communities living along the seashore should develop the habit of planting more of them adding it could help protect the people living around the shores from storm destructions.

Ms Ayitey has advised the fishermen and the fishmongers to desist from keeping the seashore filthy.
