Mediate Herdsmen, Farmers Impasse – Best Farmer

By: Ahiador Catherine

In the not too recent past and over the years, clashes between Fulani herdsmen and local farmers have led to destruction of lives and properties. Examples can be cited in several parts of the country including Agogo, the Afram Plains as well as other parts of the country.

Mr. Awudu Karim was the 2013 national best farmer as well as the 2010 national livestock best farmer.  Speaking on Rite FM’s Akuafo Sesen on Tuesday with Owuraku Asamoah, Mr. Karim explained that the  problem between the farmers and the herdsmen can only be resolved if authorities mediate properly between the two parties.

According to him, farmers need to be educated on the measures to take when the Fulanis destroy their farms and also the herdsmen needs to be advised to be calm when farmers confront them in times of destruction to their farm produce.

Mr. Karim was sure that this would ensure and promote the much needed peace between the two antagonizing parties. He condemned the activities of the herdsmen over the destruction of farmlands while expressing worry over retaliatory acts taken by the farmers. He added that affected farmers must seek a peaceful approach to the problem and that in this way; the owners of the cattle would be willing to repay the farmers their losses.

The former best farmer also noted that though cattle farming are widespread across the country, real livestock keeping is more prevalent in the north of the country.
