Maize Farmers Under Siege From Moths

By Catherine Ahiador:

Maize farms all over the country now live on the edge due to the recent moth outbreak on maize farms in certain parts of the country. Mr. Hilarion Nyarko, Production Manager at VEGPRO at Togormeh Fordjoku in the Lower Manya Krobo district of the Eastern region has bemoaned the high rate of destruction of his maize farmat his maize farm is on the high rate of destruction.

He explained that the moths themselves are not destructive but rather their larvae which are the main agents of destruction of the maize farms. He explained that the moths just lay their eggs on the crops and the larvae further feed on the crops, leading to the destruction of the crops.

He also stated that the moth begins affecting the crops immediately the crops are planted on the farmland. Mr. Nyarko made it clear that the activities of the insects have affected about 10 hectors of crops on his maize farm.

To him, the problem if not confronted has the potential of spreading to different places within the country.
