Maize Farmers Bracing Up For Possible Maize Shortage

Akuapem North’s best farmer for the 2015 Farmers’ Day, Mr. Samuel Cole who is a mixed crop farmer has raised their fears and concerns the possibility of Ghanaians experiencing a maize shortage. This according to him is possible in the face of the continuous absence of the rains which has reduced crop yield to an all-time low.

He added that he currently has 10 acres as well as 30 bags of maize. This according to him is a strategic move to save what he has the absence of the rains is expected to send the cost of maize to the roofs.

The best farmer, who is married with three wives and 14 children, has a number of workers on his farm. According to him, maize farming is very profitable but expensive to manage compared to other crops. He maintained that maize is one of the most economically viable crops that everyone can cultivate to feed the family and the nation as a whole.

In an interview with Mr. Samuel Cole on the Akuafo Sen Sen segment of the Rite Morning Ride, he lamented that despite the harmattan season, some recalcitrant people continued to engage in the indiscriminate setting of fire. The result of their actions is avoidable fire outbreaks which have destroyed the majority of farm products.

This Mr. Cole observed that the situation could result in a nationwide food shortage especially with the absence of the rains.

Meanwhile, Mr. Samuel Cole appeals for support from government to help farmers with irrigation systems.
