In a quest to increase the new cassava variety, ‘Banchihemah’ among farmers in Lower Manya Municipal Assembly, the department of agriculture under the leadership of the Director of Agriculture, Mr. Philip Lawson has cultivated about twenty acres of the new cassava variety in order to distribute the cassava sticks to famers after harvesting.

Every year, scientists conduct several agricultural researches of which some result in the new cassava variety we are witnessing today. Presently, the West African Agriculture Productivity Project (WAAPP), has supported agricultural activities in diverse ways including the invention of new varieties of Cassava, maize, Yam, Cocoyam and even beans.

According to Mr. Philip Amoah the director of Extensions at Lower Manya, the cassava demonstration farm is a collaborative effect between the department of Agriculture and one farmer who has offered to provide the twenty acres of farming land for the cultivation. This he said is the only way the department can multiply the new variety for farmers.

The Director of the Department of Agriculture, Mr. Philip Lawson could not hide his satisfaction that some farmers understand the need to help the department. The benefit to this farmer for providing the land for the demonstration farms is some samples of the cassava sticks and the cassava tubers when it is harvested.
