Local Poultry Is Safe For Christmas

By Saddath Asiamah:

Just as Ghanaians began to feel a little relief from the effects of the devastating bird flu which struck the poultry industry a few months ago, the disease has reared its ugly head again in some parts of the country. Several birds affected by the contagious disease back in May, 2015 were destroyed and the affected farmers were duly compensated to make up for their losses. This was a step taken by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to control the effects of the disease.

In an interview with Mr. Victor Oppong, the president for Ghana the National Association of Poultry Farmers on Rite FM, he said in order to solve the problem of the bird flu, the poultry farmers, veterinary service officers and the Ministry Of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) came together and solved the problem in the earlier outbreak. In order to combat the spread of the disease again, Mr. Oppong is proposing the same collaboration.

He also urged the effective education of poultry farmers as well as poultry sellers to guard against them bringing infected poultry to the market.

The president of the poultry farmers however still insists that local poultry is safe and the safest for the impending yuletide.
