Kumasi Prison to start pig farming

The Kumasi Central Prison plans to rear pigs to supplement the food for inmates.  This according to The Public Relations Officer of the Prsion, ASP Richard Bukari will also generate  funds for the facility’s upkeep. ASP Bukari who revealed this in an interview with Citi News said that, the huge volumes of the waste can serve as food for pigs.

“It is a result of a good management thinking, indeed there is a lot of waste generated here, especially from the food that the inmates are given….we always have left over foods and pigs depend largely on left over food….and so the OIC who is agric oriented sat and thought it wise, so out of this generated waste, which is feed for pigs, why dont we utilise it in that direction.

They will be used in feeding the same inmates, the pigs of produced to an extent will supplememnt their food with pork or we can sell.” The PRO also mentioned that the Ghana Prison service is working with the Ministry of Agriculture, so the facility can expand its agricultural activities. This according to him will go a long way in helping food supply since the GHc1.80 per inmate which the government provides for food daily is not enough.

“The entire prison service is into agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture and Local government for the prisons to expand our agriculture, espacially with the stations that have vast land, for we in Ashanti region, we will talk of Ahinsan, Amanfrom and Obuasi. We are going to enlarge our agricultural activities, with the hope that should it be sustainable, we can supplement the feeding of prisoners here, and if possible sell some out to the citizenry or somehow even export that is if we produce on a large scale.”

“The prison service have come to realize that the over-reliance on government in relation to the feeding of the inmates is not the best, the 1.80 per inmate per day is not too good for the survival of an inmate and the prison service, so yes, we in Kumasi have welcomed the idea and we are expanding our agriculture.”

“…the ministry of local government is in collaboration with us to ensure that every national sanitation day we go out with the inmates to help keep the place tidy,” he added.
