Kings and Queens SHS Begins Intake Of Pioneering Students

Unlike the usual Commercial, General, Technical, and Vocational secondary education in Ghana, the Kings and Queens Scientific International Senior High School is offering admission solely for students with a passion to become medical or health professionals in the future.

The school is located on Akosombo-Tema Motor Way near Akuse Junction in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region.

Normally, Senior High School courses in Ghana include Science, Agriculture Science, General Arts, Business, Visual Art, Home Economics, Building and Construction, etc. with core subjects including Mathematics, Social Studies, English and lntegrated Science.

However, Kings and Queens Scientific International Senior High School (KQSHS) is deviating from the norm to run SHS academic subjects such as  Pre-Medical School Preparation, which will provide basic skills in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy,  Optometry,  Nursing and Medical Laboratory Science. The rest are Purely Science courses, Chinese Language Training and the traditional core subjects excluding Social Studies. For the importance of technology in modern day health delivery, Information Communication Technology (ICT) is set to replace Social Studies.

It is expected that after 3 years of SHS studies from KQSHS, learners acquire the basic skills in health care to propel them for the Kings and Queens Medical University College School of Medicine.

There is high demand for Doctors, Nurses and Allied Health professionals all over the world including Ghana. In 2019, a UK based research firm having conducted research in Ghana’s health sector published that, “there are only 1.1 doctors and 9.8 nurses and midwives for every 10,000 inhabitants of Ghana, both of these are below even the low regional average, and represent a real strain on the delivery of health care. Wide inequities exist in the delivery of health care in Ghana, as only 24 percent of births from the lowest income quintile are attended by a skilled health professional, leading to much higher infant mortality rates.

The school is currently inviting applications via its portal, www.kqshs.kqmuc.edu.gh for the first and second years, with a requisite qualification being Basic Education Certificate Examination BECE.

According to the Founder and Principal of the school Dr. Jerryson  Ameworgbe Gidisu, all applicants will write an Entrance Examination followed by an interview and career counseling to select the right students for admission. He says this exercise is necessary because the school is not just interested in applicants with a passion for science, but those who desire to become health practitioners in the future.

Having set the ending of April, 2021 for the beginning of the academic year, luxurious and spacious 25 per class classrooms with air conditions are ready. Students who gain admission into the school will enter their fully furnished dormitories with their luggage only. With a separate washroom in each dormitory facility, a student will also be offered a full wardrobe and a bed with a student mattress.

Dr Jerryson Gidisu noted that the school has added the Chinese language to the stream of subjects to be read by students to adequately prepare them for the exchange programmes students would embark on during vacations to Chinese medical schools and cities.

“The reason we are running a Chinese language program is that the students will be having an exchange program with our affiliate institutions in China and the rest of the world,” he said.

Individuals of all ages among the general public who have the desire or need certification for the Chinese language only are also invited.

“Let me also say that business persons who go to China to do business and people who have the passion to learn or become teachers of the Chinese language are welcome. We train and give you a certificate which qualifies you to teach the language professionally,” Dr. Jerryson Gidisu said.
