‘I won’t resign’ – Accra Mayor fights back

Despite calls from several quarters requesting his resignation in the wake of the flood and fire explosion of last Wednesday, Accra Mayor, Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, has rubbished the claims and says he is going nowhere.

Speaking for the first time on the resignation and sack calls, the man recently crowned Africa’s best mayor; related that he was very much at post and the thought of resigning has not crossed his mind.

In his words; ‘I want to assure Ghanaians and all my numerous fans that they should not fear. I am not resigning.’

Mr. Vanderpuije who was speaking on a local FM station insisted that he was not to blame for the floods and its attendant destruction.

‘Nobody can blame me! My good works are there for all to see. Only recently, the whole of Africa recognised this and gave me an award. No downpour, no deluge, no Noah’s flood, I repeat, no rainwater can wash away my achievements and my glory,’ he asserted.

He then outlined his next line of action thus; ‘as for those who want me to resign, they can forget it! My fans should not worry at all. In fact, just after this interview, I’m going to erect billboards all over town with the words, “I’m here to stay, Babe!’

Calls for his resignation have come largely from the general public and on social media. Other social commentators have joined in the calls, the latest call have come from the MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Hon. Emmanuel Boakye Agyarko.

The most recent call is a rather covert one by the Bantama Methodist Bishop, Rev. Charles Ekuban, who says he would not shed a tear for the mayor should he lose his post.
