I Am Strong Enough To Farm – Award Winning Visually Impaired Farmer

A fifty-seven year-old Stephen Nyarko who has been adjudged the best physically-challenged farmer during last Saturday’s national Farmer’s Day in the Asuogyaman district in the Eastern Region has told ritefmonline that he engages in his farming activities himself when he does not have money to hire the services of labourers. “Sometimes if I don’t have money to hire labours, I have to do the weeding myself,” he said.

Stephen Nyarko who is based in Akwamu Aboasa in the Asuogyman District engages in the production and cultivation of Maize, Oil Palm, Cassava, and Plantain and also into animal husbandry. To his credit, he has 4 acres of maize farm, 4 acres of oil palm, 0.5 acres of plantain and 15 goats. Stephen Nyarko is married with 6 children but however facing a huge financial challenge which does not allow him to expand his farm. He added that, he has 4 acres of oil palm but lies in the forest as a result of inadequate financial resources to hire labors to weed the farmland.

Mr. Stephen Nyarko, further advised the youth who are eager for white color jobs to go into agriculture since that is the only way to improve the status of the economy and also prevent food shortage in the country.

He further pleaded with relevant authorities in the country and other stakeholders in agriculture to come to his aid and support him financially since that is the only means of employment and livelihood for himself and his family.
