Hundreds displaced after rainstorm hits Northern region

Heavy rains last night have left over a hundred residents of Sagnerigu in the Northern region displaced.

No deaths have been recorded but several properties have been destroyed in the two districts, Sagnerigu and Chereponi.

One of the displaced residents, Isaac Fernipeh told JOYNEWS authorities of the District Assembly are not showing enough commitment in dealing with perennial flooding in the area.

“I wish the MP and opinion leaders are there to see things for themselves. Because they are not here they do not take it serious” Isaac expressed frustration.

The Northern sector of the country known to be drier is experiencing its share of flooding in the rainy season after a similar one in Accra contributed to 152 fatalities on June 3.

Roofs of a number of houses and that of a Senior High School in Tumu in the Sisala District of the Upper West Region  were also ripped off after a rainstorm Sunday.

An Assembly man in the area Wutor Mahama Bawa told Joy News some homes were affected but the worst affected are three staff bungalows and other buildings in the Kanton Senior High School.

The Kanton Senior High school has not seen any major renovation since the 1970s making its structures vulnerable to strong weather conditions.

Some staff of the school are sharing residences temporarily until repairs are done.
