H3N2 Flu Pops Up In MAKROSEC, Suspected Cases Under Investigation

  • Team of medical doctors are in the school monitoring the situation
  • Total affected Senior High Schools in Lower Manya add up to four
  • The schools have not been closed down as speculated

School authorities of the Manya Krobo Senior High School (MAKROSEC) in the Eastern region say they are investigating suspected cases of flu in the school.

The is screening some 65 students who have reported to the school’s sick bay with symptoms similar to the H3N2 virus.

Personnel from the Ghana Health Service are conducting the exercise following the outbreak of the disease in three senior high schools in the municipality since Monday, October 28, 2019.

A team from the World Health Organization, Ghana Health Service and the Ghana Education Service are visiting schools on Monday and Tuesday, 4th and 5th November, 2019 respectively including the Krobo Girls Senior High School at Odumase, Legacy Girls Senior High School and Akuse Methodist Senior high technical school and Akro technical senior high school.

The visit will offer the team the opportunity to ascertain the situation of the outbreak of the disease in the schools. 

Also, authorities of the Lower Manya Krobo Education Directorate say the media report that schools in the area are closed down following the outbreak of H3N2 is false.

Mrs Sophia Samdji, Public Relation Officer of the Directorate told Rite News that, the Municipal Chief Executive for the area, Hon Simon Kweku Tetteh has summoned a stakeholder meeting in the early hours of the afternoon to address the situation.

However, closure of the affected school, she said, was not considered during the meeting.

Meanwhile, Sophia Manyeyo Samadji and Municipal School Health Education Programme (SHEP) Coordinator, Godfred Ofoe Caesar in allaying the fears of parents and the general public said the situation was under control.

Forty seven students of AMEST and 300 of KROGISS were infected by the flu, a situation which necessitated prompt medical responses from Accra, Koforidua and the municipal health directorate.
