Government is expected to meet the various transport unions on Thursday, January 7, to discuss and approve new transport fares following the latest increase in the prices of petroleum products.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have served notice that transport fares will go up at all cost, after a meeting with the Transport Ministry.
The GRTCC has explained that apart from the recent hikes in fuel prices, other factors will drive the transport fares higher than expected.
According to the GRTCC, high cost of spare parts and the depreciation of the cedi will be key determinants in the upward adjustment of transport fares.
The pending increase has been triggered by the increase in the cost of petroleum products between 18 to 28 percent.
Speaking to Citi News, the National Chairman of the GPRTU, Kwame Kuma, said the union will complete its projections before the meeting on Thursday.
“We have scheduled a meeting with the Ministry on Thursday so we will meet the ministry and other stakeholders to discuss the increment,” he said.
