Government Urged to Support Research Institutions

By Nyarko Francis:

The need to create opportunity for researchers and industry players to take advantage of local condition favoring research for business solutions has become necessary in this globally competitive era.

In view of this, the Council for Science and Industrial Research, CSIR, in collaboration with the Association Ghana Industries, AGI, organized a Marketable Technologies Building Materials Forum for stakeholders in the research and technology industry in Accra.

The Director of CSIR-STCPRI, Dr George Essegbey speaking to Rite news in an interview after the forum said the platform was created so that stakeholders will have the opportunity to link with industry and have discussion on how best to generate technologies from the research institutions that address their needs in the industry.

He stated that bringing about innovation in any society is not assigned to one specific actor, stating that the researchers can do a lot of things but if the technologies are not adopted by the industry, it will fail and then researchers will be redundant. Mr. Essegbey said the industry is a collective unit and government must therefore support the research institution and ensure that all stakeholders play their roles in policies formulation that addresses the need for industries to absolve technologies from the research institution as well as the policies that will push and encourage the research institution also to supply technologies to the private sector.

Dr Essegbey indicated that what CSIR want to do is to ensure that the research institutions are producing the kinds of technologies the industry need.

Meanwhile, the Head of Commercialization at the Crop Research Institute of the CSIR, Mr. Emmanuel Adjei has advised farmers to plant crops that have short duration since the climate change continue to cause changes in the rainfall pattern.

He added that the local varieties takes too much time before harvesting and the farmers found themselves wanting when the rainfall pattern changes. With the new varieties the Crop Research Institution has released into the market recently, however, that can withstand the drought season and have short period of harvesting before the rain stop.

He explained that farmers can have access to these new varieties of crops at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture- MOFA offices across the country.
