Ghana vegetarian association joined G.M.O battle

The public relation officer (PRO) for Ghana vegetarian association Mr. Edwin Baafo has said, they have joined food sovereignty Ghana to battle the ministry of food and agriculture (MoFA), national bio-safety committee and other association in court over the introduction of genetically modified organism (GMO) into Ghana.

According to him, as at now nobody know the side effect Genetically Modified Foods (GMO) foods in the long term and research has it that it is harmful to the soil.

He explained that, because GMO was developed in a lab, it needs more fertilizer, pesticides and herbicides before it can grow well, thereby making the soil to lose it natural  nutrients, adding that even though GMO yield more , Ghana already has more excess foods on the market for consumption.

He noted that, two hundred and ninety (290) farmers have committed suicide in India due to these GMO crops not able yield enough to cover their loans doubled with destroying their soil and posting threat to the people there.

Indicating that, some Europeans countries like France, Italy and others have come up with a law ordering the labelling of GMO foods on their market.
